**Omit point P identified in part (a) for the rest of this question.**

It is desired to predict the record time in future years. Explain why, in this context, a linear model is likely to be inappropriate.

The following models are proposed to describe the relationship between $t$ and $y$:

Model A: $t = a - b y^2$; $\qquad$ Model B: $t = a + \frac{b}{y}$.

Explain, without further calculation, why Model B provides a more accurate model of the relationship between $t$ and $y$ than Model A.

For Model B, find the product moment correlation coefficient between $t$ and $\frac{1}{y}$. State the values of $a$ and of $b$ correct to $5$ significant figures.

Use your equation to estimate the record time in $2025$, correct to $3$ significant figures. Explain whether your estimate is reliable.

It is required to estimate the value of $y$ for which $t = 52.45$. Use a suitable equation to find the estimated value of $y$, correct to the nearest integer. Explain why neither the regression line of $y^2$ on $t$ nor the regression line of $\frac{1}{y}$ on $t$ should be used.

As part of the sound calibration for the National Day Parade at the Padang, sound engineers test how sound intensity changes with distance from the main stage speakers during rehearsals. This is helpful for calibrating the speaker system to avoid sound distortion or echo across seating zones.

At a particular rehearsal, the engineers record the sound intensity, $y$, measured in decibels, at various distances, $x$, measured in metres from the stage speakers and recorded the data in the table below.

At a particular spectator seat in the Padang, the sound intensity was recorded to be $20$ decibels. Estimate the distance of this spectator seat from the stage speakers. Explain whether your estimate is reliable.

As another part of sound calibration for the National Day Parade, engineers also measured the time that it takes for sound to reach the spectator stands, $t$, measured in milliseconds, at various distances, $x$, measured in metres from the stage speakers.

The engineers would like to investigate if the model $t = 2.916x$ is a good fit of the above data. For a model $t = \mathrm{f}(x)$, the residual for a point $(p, q)$ is $q - \mathrm{f}(p)$.

Various studies suggest that plants exposed to music tend to grow taller compared to those not exposed to music. A junior biologist wants to investigate the effects of music on the growth of different plants. In one experiment, vines of a particular species were exposed to classical music. He recorded the average length of the vines, $h$ centimetres, at age $t$ days, in the table below.

The junior biologist realised that the relationship between $h$ and $t$ is not linear and can be modelled by either

$h=a\sqrt[3]{t}+b$ or $h=c\sqrt{t}+d$,

where $a$, $b$, $c$ and $d$ are constants.

For a line of best fit $y=\mathrm{f}\left( x \right)$, the residual is the difference between the observed and predicted value. The difference between an observed value $\left( p,q \right)$ plotted on the scatter diagram and the predicted value $\left( p,\mathrm{f}\left( p \right) \right)$ is defined as $q-\mathrm{f}\left( p \right)$.
