Work Rate and Productivity Using Simultaneous Equations

Work Rate and Productivity Using Simultaneous Equations

Secondary 2

Jolene can make \(x\) ornaments in \(4\) hours and Fiona can make \(y\) ornaments in \(3\) hours. Every hour, Fiona makes \(3\) more ornaments than Jolene. Together, both of them can make \((2y-x+5)\) ornaments in \(5\) hours.

  1. Form a pair of simultaneous equations to represent the above information and show that the equations can be simplified to
    \(\begin{align} & 4y-3x=36 \\ & 27x-4y=60 \end{align}\)
  2. Solve the simultaneous equations in (a) and hence, find the number of ornaments made by both Jolene and Fiona in \(5\) hours.
