A powered trolley travels in a straight line from loading point \(A\) towards a safety barrier at \(C\). It passes sensor \(B\) after \(4\) seconds. During this first stage, its velocity is \(v=10-t\text{ m s}^{-1}\). The barrier is \(9\) metres beyond \(B\). As soon as the trolley passes \(B\), emergency braking begins; \(T\) seconds later its acceleration is \(-3T\text{ m s}^{-2}\).

  1. Find the distance \(AB\) and the speed of the trolley as it passes \(B\).[3]
  2. Find the time taken after passing \(B\) for the trolley to stop.[2]
  3. Determine whether the trolley reaches the barrier. If it does not, find the distance between the trolley and the barrier when it stops.[3]

Answer:(i) \(AB=32\text{ m}\), speed \(=6\text{ m s}^{-1}\); (ii) \(2\text{ s}\); (iii) it stops \(1\text{ m}\) before \(C\)
