| Set | Membership rule |
|---|---|
| \(A\cap B\) | In both A and B. |
| \(A\cup B\) | In A or B, including both. |
| \(A'\) | In \(\xi\) but not in A. |
| \(A\cap B'\) | In A but not in B. |
For a combined expression, use the brackets first. The set \((A\cup B)'\) contains elements in neither A nor B. The set \((A\cap B)'\) contains elements that are not in both; this includes elements in just one set.
A complement depends on the universal set. Always identify the universe before listing a complement or shading outside a circle.
