Technical Report: Variance Analysis of Biological Samples

Secondary 4

The waiting time in minutes for \(50\) patients at two hospitals were given as follows.

Hospital \(A\):

Time (minutes)\(20 < t \le 24\)\(24 < t \le 28\)\(28 < t \le 32\)\(32 < t \le 36\)\(36 < t \le 40\)
Number of patients\(4\)\(14\)\(23\)\(6\)\(3\)

Hospital \(B\):

Mean (minutes) = \(29.2\)
Standard Deviation (minutes) = \(3.5\)
  1. For Hospital \(A\), calculate an estimate of
    1. the mean waiting time,
    2. the standard deviation, correct to \(3\) significant figures.
  2. Compare briefly, the waiting time for the two hospitals.

Answer:(a)(i) 29.2 minutes. (ii) 3.84 minutes (3 s.f.). (b) Same mean; Hospital B is more consistent because its standard deviation is smaller.
