Resident income tax bands
In this unit, Year of Assessment 2027 uses employment income earned in 2026. Income tax is calculated on chargeable income after the eligible reliefs stated in each question. The table is an extract of the Singapore resident schedule, checked on 07/11/2026. Each rate applies only to its own band.
| Chargeable income slice | Tax rate |
|---|---|
| First \(\$20\,000\) | \(0\%\) |
| Next \(\$10\,000\) | \(2\%\) |
| Next \(\$10\,000\) | \(3.5\%\) |
| Next \(\$40\,000\) | \(7\%\) |
| Next \(\$40\,000\) | \(11.5\%\) |
Example
Suppose a resident earned \(\$50000\) and qualifies for \(\$10000\) of compulsory employee CPF relief and \(\$1000\) of Earned Income Relief. With no other reliefs, chargeable income is \(50000-10000-1000=\$39000\).
The first \(\$20000\) has no tax. The next \(\$10000\) contributes \(\$200\). Only \(\$9000\) falls in the 3.5% band, contributing \(9000(0.035)=\$315\). Income tax before rebates is \(\$515\).
CPF and the monthly wage ceiling
In the 2026 exercises, the employee is a Singapore citizen aged under 55, earning more than \(\$750\) a month with no bonus. The employee CPF contribution is 20% of the monthly ordinary wages counted for CPF, up to \(\$8000\) a month. For example, if monthly wages are \(\$9000\), the employee contribution is \(8000(0.20)=\$1600\) a month. Use the full wages to calculate gross employment income.
The employer contributes separately. Do not add the employer contribution to the employee’s gross pay or claim it as employee CPF relief in these exercises. Where the question explicitly gives an eligible child and allocates the full Qualifying Child Relief to the employee, the stated amount is \(\$4000\) for that child.
Check that the tax slices add up to the chargeable income. Work out tax before rebates. The supplied exercise rules state which reliefs to use.
