Symmetry of a normal distribution of fish lengths: complementary and symmetric tail probabilities and an expected count

Symmetry of a normal distribution of fish lengths: complementary and symmetric tail probabilities and an expected count

9 marks

The lengths of the fish in a lake are normally distributed with mean \(42\text{ cm}\). A fish is caught at random. The probability that its length is more than \(50\text{ cm}\) is \(0.09\).

  1. Find the probability that the length of the fish is less than \(50\text{ cm}\).[2]
  2. The probability that the length of the fish is less than \(c\text{ cm}\) is \(0.09\). Find the value of \(c\).[3]
  3. During one season, \(350\) fish are caught at random from the lake. Find the expected number of these fish with a length between \(42\text{ cm}\) and \(50\text{ cm}\).[4]
