Working back from a pie chart

Working back from a pie chart

A pie chart shows how \(240\) students travel to school: bus, MRT, walking and car. The bus sector is \(135^\circ\). The walking and car sectors are in the ratio \(2:1\), and the MRT sector is \(45^\circ\) larger than the walking sector.

  1. Find the angles of the MRT, walking and car sectors.[3]
  2. Find the number of students who travel by each mode.[2]
  3. Last year \(300\) students were surveyed and the bus sector was \(150^\circ\). Sam says the pie charts show that fewer students take the bus this year. Explain whether Sam's reasoning is valid, and compare the actual numbers.[2]

Answer:(a) MRT \(117^\circ\), walking \(72^\circ\), car \(36^\circ\) (b) bus \(90\), MRT \(78\), walking \(48\), car \(24\) (c) not valid reasoning: angles are fractions of different totals; the counts are \(125\) and \(90\)
