A frequency table with two missing frequencies

A frequency table with two missing frequencies

The table shows the number of goals scored by a team in each of \(25\) matches. The mean number of goals per match is \(2.4\).

Goals\(0\)\(1\)\(2\)\(3\)\(4\)
Number of matches\(2\)\(x\)\(6\)\(y\)\(3\)
  1. Form two equations and find \(x\) and \(y\).[3]
  2. Find the median and the mode.[2]
  3. One more match is played and the mean becomes exactly \(2.5\). Find the number of goals in that match, and explain whether the median changes.[2]

Answer:(a) \(x=3\), \(y=11\) (b) median \(3\), mode \(3\) (c) \(5\) goals; the 13th and 14th values are still \(3\), so the median stays \(3\)
