A country consumes about \(3.1\times10^8\) kg of rice in a year. A grain of rice has a mass of about \(2.5\times10^{-5}\) kg and a length of about \(6\) mm.

  1. Estimate the number of grains of rice consumed in a year, giving your answer in standard form.[2]
  2. If these grains were laid end to end, estimate the total length in kilometres, in standard form.[2]
  3. The distance from the Earth to the Sun is about \(1.5\times10^{8}\) km. A student claims the line of grains would reach the Sun. Use your answer to (b) to comment on the claim, and state one assumption in your estimate.[3]

Answer:(a) \(1.24\times10^{13}\) (b) \(7.44\times10^{7}\) km (c) About half the Earth–Sun distance, so the claim is false; grains assumed identical and touching
