Selling Dresses: Forming and Solving a Quadratic Equation

Selling Dresses: Forming and Solving a Quadratic Equation

Secondary 3

Jenny is an online seller, bought \(x\) dresses for a total of \(\$720\).

  1. Write down an expression for the cost price of each dress in terms of \(x\).
  2. She sold \(16\) of them for \(\$480\) and the rest at a loss of \(\$2\) per dress due to minor defects.
    1. Write down, in terms of \(x\), the number of dresses that were sold at a loss.
    2. Write down in terms of \(x\), the selling price of each dress that was sold at a loss.
    3. Show that the total, in dollars, she received from the sale of all dresses can be written as \(\$\left(1232-\frac{11520}{x}-2x\right)\).
  3. Given that Jenny made a profit of \(\$120\) altogether, form an equation in \(x\) and show that it reduces to \({{x}^{2}}-196x+5760=0\).
  4. Solve the equation \({{x}^{2}}-196x+5760=0\).
  5. Given that the cost price of each dress is more than \(\$10\), find the cost of each dress.
