Root sums and products of a quartic

Root sums and products of a quartic

IB Year 6 | Grade 12

The roots of the equation \(2x^4-4x^3-5x^2+6x-10=0\) are \(\alpha\), \(\beta\), \(\gamma\) and \(\delta\).

  1. Write down the values of \(\sum\alpha\), \(\sum\alpha\beta\), \(\sum\alpha\beta\gamma\) and \(\alpha\beta\gamma\delta\).
  2. Hence find the value of \(\alpha^2+\beta^2+\gamma^2+\delta^2\).
