Recovering unknown binomial quantities

Recovering unknown binomial quantities

TGM Original
Coefficients can determine an unknown numerical parameter or a positive integer exponent. Derive each coefficient directly from the binomial theorem before equating it to the given value. For (1+kx)n, the first coefficients are 1,nk, n(n-1)2k2, n(n-1)(n-2)6k3. Each comes from selecting the indicated number of kx factors; no extra coefficient identity is needed. Identify the relevant powers, write coefficient equations, solve them together and check every candidate against the original equations. Retain both signs after a square unless a given condition removes one. Require n to be a positive integer. If the coefficient of x2 in (1+kx)4 is 24, then 6k2=24, so k=2 or k=-2. Both give the stated quadratic coefficient. Dividing by an unknown can discard zero. Check the question excludes zero, or test zero before division. Equality of signed coefficients is different from equality of their magnitudes.
