Quadratic Functions, Equations and Inequalities - Solving Quadratic Equations Graphically

IP 2

Answer the whole of this question on a sheet of graph paper.

The variables \(x\) and \(y\) are connected by the equation \(y=\frac{1}{2}(2-x)(5+x)\).

The table below shows some values of \(x\) and the corresponding values of \(y\).

\(x\)

\(-5\)

\(-4\)

\(-3\)

\(-2\)

\(-1\)

\(0\)

\(1\)

\(2\)

\(3\)

\(y\)

\(0\)

\(3\)

\(p\)

\(6\)

\(6\)

\(5\)

\(3\)

\(0\)

\(-4\)

  1. Find the value of \(p\).
  2. Using a scale of \(2\) cm to 1 unit on each axis, draw the graph of the equation\(y=\frac{1}{2}(2-x)(5+x)\) for \(-5\le x\le 3\).
  3. Hence, use your graph to solve the equation \((2-x)(5+x)=8\).
