Quadratic Functions, Equations and Inequalities - Solving Quadratic Equations Graphically

IP 2

Answer the whole of this question on a sheet of graph paper.

The variables \(x\) and \(y\) are connected by the equation

\(y=-{{x}^{2}}+2x+5\) for \(-3\le x\le 5\)

Some corresponding values of \(x\) and \(y\) are given in the table below.

\(x\)

\(-3\)

\(-2\)

\(-1\)

\(0\)

\(1\)

\(2\)

\(3\)

\(4\)

\(5\)

\(y\)

\(-10\)

\(-3\)

\(2\)

\(5\)

\(p\)

\(5\)

\(2\)

\(-3\)

\(-10\)

  1. Calculate the value of \(p\).
  2. Using a scale of 2 cm to 1 unit, draw a horizontal \(x\)-axis for \(-3\le x\le 5\) and using a scale of 1 cm to 1 unit, draw a vertical \(y\)-axis \(-10\le y\le 6\).

On your axes, plot the points given in the table and join them smoothly.

  1. Use your graph to find the value of \(y\) when \(x=4.5\).
  2. Use your graph to find the solutions of the equation \(-{{x}^{2}}+2x+5=0\).
