A straight ladder of length \(6.5\) m leans against a vertical wall. Its foot rests on horizontal ground \(2.5\) m from the foot of the wall.

  1. Find the height up the wall reached by the top of the ladder.[2]
  2. The foot of the ladder slips a further \(0.8\) m away from the wall. Find how far the top of the ladder slides down the wall.[3]
  3. A safety guideline says that the distance of the foot from the wall should be one quarter of the height reached. Find the distance of the foot from the wall when this ladder follows the guideline exactly, and comment on the original position.[3]

Answer:(a) \(6\text{ m}\) (b) \(0.4\text{ m}\) (c) \(1.58\text{ m}\) (3 s.f.); the original \(2.5\text{ m}\) exceeds the guideline's \(1.5\text{ m}\)
