Probabilities of two events in terms of a parameter and the values that make the events independent

Probabilities of two events in terms of a parameter and the values that make the events independent

9 marks

For two events \(A\) and \(B\), \(\mathrm{P}(A\cap B)=\dfrac{9-x}{15}\), \(\mathrm{P}(A'\cap B)=\dfrac{5+x}{30}\) and \(\mathrm{P}(A\cap B')=\dfrac{1}{5}\), where \(0\leq x\leq9\).

  1. Show that \(\mathrm{P}(B)=\dfrac{23-x}{30}\).[3]

Suppose now that the events \(A\) and \(B\) are independent.

  1. Find all possible values of \(x\).[6]
