Perimeter and Area of Trapezium

Perimeter and Area of Trapezium

TGM Original Questions

In the figure below, \(ABCD\) is a trapezium such that \(AB = (3x - 1)\) cm, \(BC = y\) cm, \(CD = (4x - 2)\) cm, \(AD = 4.20\) cm and \(EF = 4\) cm. Given that the area and perimeter of trapezium \(ABCD\) is \(50\) cm\(^2\) and \(33.6\) cm, find

  1. the value of \(x\),
  2. the value of \(y\).

Source consistency note: the area equation gives \(x=4\), and the perimeter equation gives \(y=4.4\). If every measurement is exact, the side projections would require the base-length difference to be \(\sqrt{4.20^2-4^2}+\sqrt{4.4^2-4^2}\approx3.114\) cm (or about 0.552 cm with the other orientation), rather than \(14-11=3\) cm. Treat the answers as conditional results from the supplied area and perimeter; the exact geometry conflicts.

Answer:(a) \(x=4\). (b) \(y=4.4\text{ cm}\). Conditional on the supplied area/perimeter; exact source geometry is inconsistent.
