Whole-number points on a straight line

Whole-number points on a straight line

IP 1
7 marks

A straight line has equation \(y=12-\dfrac35x\).

  1. State the gradient of the line and find the coordinates of the points where it meets the axes.[3]
  2. Explain why, if \(x\) and \(y\) are both whole numbers on this line, \(x\) must be a multiple of \(5\). Hence find all the points on the line whose coordinates are both positive integers.[3]
  3. How many points on the line have coordinates that are both whole numbers greater than or equal to \(0\)?[1]

Answer:(a) gradient \(-\dfrac35\); \((0,12)\) and \((20,0)\) (b) \(5\) divides \(3x\), so \(5\) divides \(x\); \((5,9)\), \((10,6)\), \((15,3)\) (c) \(5\)
