The following laws hold for \(a,b>0\) and real indices. In root notation, \(n\) is a positive integer.
Same base
\(a^m a^n=a^{m+n}\qquad\dfrac{a^m}{a^n}=a^{m-n}\qquad(a^m)^n=a^{mn}\)
| Examples |
|---|
Same index
\(a^n b^n=(ab)^n\qquad\dfrac{a^n}{b^n}=\left(\dfrac ab\right)^n\)
| Examples |
|---|
Zero, negative and fractional indices
\(a^0=1\qquad a^{-n}=\dfrac1{a^n}\qquad a^{\frac{m}{n}}=\sqrt[n]{a^m}\)
| Examples |

Addition and subtraction
| Skill | Working |
|---|---|
| Split shifted powers, then add like terms | |
| Split, then multiply powers with the same index |
Combine like terms; index laws do not combine a sum or difference into a single power.
