Fruit Boxes Problem Leading to a Quadratic Equation

Fruit Boxes Problem Leading to a Quadratic Equation

Secondary 2

A strawberry box contains \(y\) strawberries. A lychee box contains \(8\) less lychees compared to the number of strawberries in a strawberry box. There are \(\frac{y}{2}\) strawberries boxes and thrice as many lychee boxes.

  1. Write down in terms of \(y\),
    1. the number of lychees in one lychee box.
    2. the total number of lychees in all the lychee boxes.
  2. Show that the total number of strawberries and lychees is \(2{{y}^{2}}-12y\).

The total number of strawberries and lychees is \(144\).

  1. Find the number of strawberries in one box.
  2. The profit from selling one strawberry box is \(\$\left( 0.9x+2 \right)\). If the total profit of selling all the strawberry boxes is \(\$120\), find the value of \(x\).
