Each equation describes a line of possible pairs. Their common point satisfies both equations. Plot both lines accurately and read both coordinates of their intersection; a graphical reading is normally an estimate.
Example
The lines \(x+y=5\) and \(y=x+1\) meet at \((2,3)\). Thus \(x=2\) and \(y=3\).
Distinct parallel lines have no common solution. Two equations describing the same line have infinitely many common solutions. A drawing that appears nearly parallel is not enough to decide: compare the equations.
