Comparing tariffs and exchange rates

Comparing tariffs and exchange rates

Secondary 1
TGM Original — E Math Summary Notes (4052), 2026 editorial manuscript

Use the supplied rate in the stated direction. A tariff may include a fixed charge or different bands, so total cost is not always directly proportional to usage. Compare options for the actual usage required.

Example

An illustrative water tariff charges \(\$8\) fixed, \(\$0.30\) per unit for the first \(50\) units, and \(\$0.45\) per unit thereafter. For \(70\) units, the bill is \(8+50(0.30)+20(0.45)=\$32\).

If \(1\text{ SGD}=0.72\text{ USD}\), exchanging \(500\text{ SGD}\) gives \(360\text{ USD}\) before fees. To obtain \(360\text{ USD}\), the required Singapore amount is \(\dfrac{360}{0.72}=500\text{ SGD}\).

Apply a stated fee in the currency and at the stage specified. Label currencies; a numerical answer without them may reverse the intended exchange.
