Vector Subtraction

Vector Subtraction

Secondary 4

When subtracting two vectors \(\overrightarrow{AB}\) and \(\overrightarrow{CB}\):

\(\overrightarrow{AB} - \overrightarrow{CB} = \overrightarrow{AC}\)

For any two column vectors, \(\mathbf{a} = \begin{pmatrix} p \\ q \end{pmatrix}\) and \(\mathbf{b} = \begin{pmatrix} r \\ s \end{pmatrix}\), then

\(\!\!\!\!\) \(\mathbf{a} - \mathbf{b} = \begin{pmatrix} p - r \\ q - s \end{pmatrix}\)

Answer:AB - CB = AB + BC = AC; for a = (p, q)^T and b = (r, s)^T, a - b = (p - r, q - s)^T.
