Segments and Sectors

Secondary 3
  1. Segments
    List item image
    • \(PQ\) is a line segment joining two points on the circumference.
    It is called a chord.
    • Arc \(PXQ\) is called the minor arc while arc \(PYQ\) is called the major arc.
    • \(PQ\) divides the circle into two areas.
    • The area enclosed by minor arc \(PXQ\) and chord \(PQ\) is called minor segment.
    • The area enclosed by major arc \(PYQ\) and chord \(PQ\) is called major segment.
  2. Sectors
    List item image
    • \(OP\) and \(OQ\) are radii of the circle.
    • The area enclosed by radii \(OP\) and \(OQ\) and minor arc \(PXQ\) is called the minor sector of the circle.
    • The area enclosed by radii \(OP\) and \(OQ\) and major arc \(PYQ\) is called the major sector of the circle.

Answer:The minor and major segments are the regions bounded by chord \(PQ\) and arcs \(PXQ\) and \(PYQ\), respectively. The corresponding sectors are bounded by radii \(OP\), \(OQ\), and those arcs. An arc alone is not a segment or sector.
