Solving Quadratic Equations by Graphical Method

Solving Quadratic Equations by Graphical Method

Secondary 3

Recall:

When solving a pair of simultaneous equations

\(y=a{{x}^{2}}+bx+c\)

and \(\qquad\qquad\qquad\qquad\qquad\qquad\qquad\qquad\qquad\qquad\;\;\;\; y=0\)

the value(s) of \(x\) obtained are the solution(s) to the quadratic equation \(a{{x}^{2}}+bx+c=0\).

Tip:

To find the solutions (i.e. value(s) of \(x\)) of the quadratic equation \(a{{x}^{2}}+bx+c=0\),

draw the corresponding quadratic graph of \(y=a{{x}^{2}}+bx+c\) first, then

these solutions will be the value(s) of the \(x\)-coordinate of the point(s) of intersection of the quadratic graph with the \(x\)-axis (equation is \(y=0\)) as shown in the diagram below:
