Median, Quartiles, Range and Interquartile Range

Median, Quartiles, Range and Interquartile Range

Secondary 4

Discrete Data

Case 1: Number of Data is ODD.

NOTE: Always arrange the data in ascending order.

  • Median will divide the data into \(2\) equal halves.

  • Median \(= 5\)

  • Lower Quartile, \(Q_1 = \frac{2+2}{2} = 2\)

  • Upper Quartile, \(Q_3 = \frac{6+9}{2} = 7.5\)

  • Interquartile Range \(= Q_3 - Q_1\)

\(\qquad\qquad\qquad\qquad\;\;\;\,\) \(= 7.5 - 2\)

\(\qquad\qquad\qquad\qquad\;\;\;\,\) \(= 5.5\)

  • Range \(= \text{Max} - \text{Min}\)

\(\qquad\qquad\qquad\qquad\;\;\;\,\) \(= 11 - 1\)

\(\qquad\qquad\qquad\qquad\;\;\;\,\) \(= 10\)

Case 2: Number of data is EVEN.

NOTE: Always arrange the data in ascending order.

  • Median will divide the data into \(2\) equal halves.

  • Median \(= \frac{(5+6)}{2} = 5.5\)

  • Lower Quartile, \(Q_1 = 2\)

  • Upper Quartile, \(Q_3 = 9\)

  • Interquartile Range \(= Q_3 - Q_1\)

\(\qquad\qquad\qquad\qquad\;\;\;\,\) \(= 9 - 2\)

\(\qquad\qquad\qquad\qquad\;\;\;\,\) \(= 7\)

  • Range \(= \mathrm{Max} - \mathrm{Min}\)

\(\qquad\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\) \(= 13 - 1\)

\(\qquad\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\) \(= 12\)
