A team of \(12\) painters, all working at the same constant rate, can paint a school block in \(15\) days. The team works for \(5\) days, and then \(4\) painters leave.

  1. Find the total number of days taken to paint the block if no one else joins.[2]
  2. Instead, the contractor hires extra painters who start work on day \(9\) and stay until the job is finished. Find the least number of extra painters needed so that the block is finished by the end of day \(17\).[4]
  3. State one assumption made in your working and explain how it affects whether your answer to (b) is realistic.[2]
