Product Moment Correlation

Product Moment Correlation

Estimated Product moment correlation coefficient:

\(r=\frac{\sum{\left( x-\bar{x} \right)\left( y-\bar{y} \right)}}{\sqrt{\left\{ \sum{{{\left( x-\bar{x} \right)}^{2}}} \right\}\left\{ \sum{{{\left( y-\bar{y} \right)}^{2}}} \right\}}}=\frac{\sum{xy}-\frac{\sum{x}\sum{y}}{n}}{\sqrt{\left( \sum{{{x}^{2}}}-\frac{{{\left( \sum{x} \right)}^{2}}}{n} \right)\left( \sum{{{y}^{2}}}-\frac{{{\left( \sum{y} \right)}^{2}}}{n} \right)}}\)

Estimated regression line of \(y\) on \(x\):

\(y-\bar{y}=b\left( x-\bar{x} \right)\), where \(b=\frac{\sum{\left( x-\bar{x} \right)\left( y-\bar{y} \right)}}{\sum{{{\left( x-\bar{x} \right)}^{2}}}}\).

The value of \(r\) gives us an indication of:

  1. The direction of correlation: Positive or negatively correlated.
  2. The strength of linear correlation: The closer the absolute value of \(r\), \(\left| r \right|\), is to \(1\), the stronger the strength of the linear correlation.
Perfect Positive linear correlation, \(r=1\)
Perfect Negative linear correlation, \(r=-1\)
Strong Positive linear correlation, \(r\approx0.8\)
Strong Negative linear correlation, \(r\approx-0.8\)
Weak Positive linear correlation, \(r\approx0.4\)
Weak Negative linear correlation, \(r\approx-0.4\)
No Linear Correlation, \(r=0\)

Notes:

  1. \(-1\leq r\leq1\).
  2. \(r\) is a dimensionless quantity
  3. The value of \(r\) is independent of any linear transformations. The strength of linear relationship will not change after any translation, scaling or reflection.
  4. The value of \(r\) is the same for both \(y\) on \(x\) and \(x\) on \(y\).

Answer:The Pearson product moment correlation coefficient satisfies \(-1\le r\le1\). Its sign gives the direction of linear correlation and \(|r|\) gives the strength. In particular, \(r=1\) and \(r=-1\) are perfect positive and negative linear correlation, while \(r=0\) means no linear correlation.
