Reliability of Estimates

Reliability of Estimates

Test 1 mark, \(x\)\(17\)\(19\)\(10\)\(25\)\(28\)\(30\)\(22\)\(27\)\(12\)
Test 2 mark, \(y\)\(18\)\(19\)\(12\)\(23\)\(27\)\(26\)\(19\)\(30\)\(9\)
  1. Find the equation of the regression line of
    1. \(y\) on \(x\)
    2. \(x\) on \(y\)
  2. Tarzan scored \(23\) in test \(2\) but missed test \(1\). Use the appropriate line to estimate what his mark for test 1 should be. Is this estimated value reliable? Why?

Answer:(i)(a) \(y=0.91548x+1.00659\) (b) \(x=0.96528y+1.48380\) (ii) \(23.7\). Reasonably reliable if Tarzan and test conditions are comparable to the sample: the estimate is an interpolation and \(r=0.940\) indicates a strong positive linear correlation.
