Correcting a set of temperature readings

Correcting a set of temperature readings

IB Year 5 | Grade 11
TGM Original
Eight temperature readings, in degrees Celsius, are 10,12,12,14,14,16,16,18. For quartiles, use the medians of the lower and upper halves. The sensor calibration is corrected using y=2x-5, where x is an original reading and y is its corrected value. - Find the mean, median, lower and upper quartiles, and interquartile range of the original readings. - Calculate the population standard deviation of these eight readings. - Without listing all corrected readings, find their mean, median, interquartile range and standard deviation. - Use the 1.5 x IQR rule to decide whether any original reading is an outlier. Explain whether the calibration can change which readings are classified as outliers.

Answer:(a) mean = median \(14\), \(Q_1=12\), \(Q_3=16\), IQR \(4\); (b) \(\sqrt6\); (c) mean = median \(23\), IQR \(8\), SD \(2\sqrt6\); (d) no outliers, classification unchanged.
