Conversion of Distance-Time Graph to Speed-Time Graph

Conversion of Distance-Time Graph to Speed-Time Graph

Secondary 3

The diagram shows the distance-time graph of an object as it moves.

  1. Write down the speed of the object at \(7\) seconds.
  2. After \(10\) seconds, the speed of the object is \(0.75\) m/s. Calculate the value of \(k\).
  3. Given that the object accelerates at a constant rate, calculate the speed of the object at \(5\) seconds.
  4. Complete the speed-time graph of the object in the diagram below.

For (c) and (d), the shown curve is interpreted as having a horizontal tangent at the start, so the object starts from rest. Without that interpretation, uniform acceleration and a distance of \(4\) m in \(5\) s give only \(u+v=1.6\), not a unique final speed.

Answer:(a) \(0\text{ m/s}\). (b) \(k=18\). (c) \(1.6\text{ m/s}\). (d) Speed-time graph through \((0,0)\) and \((5,1.6)\), then \(v=0\) to \(t=10\), then \(v=0.75\) to \(t=18\).
