Real and imaginary parts of a complex number
Let \(z=x+yi\) be a complex number. We define the real part of \(z\) to be the first (real number) component \(x\), and the imaginary part of \(z\) to be the second (real number) component \(y\). We use the following notations for the real and imaginary parts of \(z\):
\[\mathrm{Re}(z)=x \text{ and}\hspace{0.5em} \mathrm{Im}(z)=y\]
