Differentiation - Problems Involving Maximisation and Minimisation

Differentiation - Problems Involving Maximisation and Minimisation

The figure shows the junction of two corridors of width \(9\) m and \(4\) m which are at right angles. \(A\) and \(C\) are variable points such that \(ABC\) is a straight line. Denoting the lengths of \(DC\) and \(AE\) by \(x\) m and \(y\) m respectively,

  1. Express \(y\) in terms of \(x\),
  2. Find the value of \(x\) for which \(AE +EC\) is a minimum.
