Techniques of Differentiation - Derivatives of Trigonometric Functions

TGM Original Questions

The diagram shows an inverted cone with slant height \(3\) cm and semi-vertical angle \(\theta\) radians.

  1. State the range of values of \(\theta\).
  2. Show that the volume of the cone, \(V\) cm\(^3\), is given by \(V = 9\pi \sin^2 \theta \cos \theta\).
  3. Find the values of \(\sin \theta\) and \(\cos \theta\) for which \(V\) has a stationary value.
  4. Hence find the stationary value of \(V\) and determine its nature. Leave your answer in terms of \(\pi\).
