Differentiation - Problems Involving Maximisation and Minimisation

TGM Original Questions

The diagram shows the junction of two corridors of width \(9\) m and \(4\) m which form a right angle. \(A\) and \(C\) are variable points such that \(ABC\) is a straight line. \(DC = x\) m and \(AE = y\) m.

  1. Express \(y\) in terms of \(x\).
  2. Find the value of \(x\) for which \(AE + EC\) has a stationary value.
  3. Hence determine the nature of this stationary value and find its value.
