Algebraic Areas in Composite Rectangles

Algebraic Areas in Composite Rectangles

Secondary 1

The diagram shows a rectangle \(ABCD\) with a square \(PBQR\) of side \(x\) cm removed. It is given that \(AP=3\) cm and \(QC=4\) cm.

  1. Find, in terms of \(x\), an expression for the area of the rectangle \(RQCS\).
  2. Find, in terms of \(x\), an expression for the area of the rectangle \(APSD\).

The area of the rectangle \(APSD\) is twice the area of the rectangle \(RQCS\).

  1. Form an equation in \(x\) and solve it.
  2. Hence find the area of the rectangle \(APSD\).
