Reading and sketching graphs

Reading and sketching graphs

TGM Original
A sketch shows the correct shape and key features; a drawing uses the requested accurate scale. Label axes, intercepts, turning points, asymptotes and any restricted endpoints. Use graphing technology to plot f, g, f+g or f-g, adjust the window, and locate zeros, intersections and extrema. A feature absent from one window may exist outside it; verify the relevant domain. Example For f(x)=x2 and g(x)=x+2, intersections solve f(x)-g(x)=x2-x-2=0. The intersection points are (-1,1) and (2,4). When no convenient analytic method exists, solve numerically: e-x=x has one solution x 0.567143. The left side decreases and the right side increases; check the displayed intersection and substitute the value back. Record enough calculator digits during working and round only the final value to the requested accuracy. Interpret each coordinate with the units and restrictions of the model.
