The height, \(y\) m, above the ground of a pellet shot by a shooting device can be modelled by the equation \(y = -2x^2 + 20x + 12\), where \(x\) m is the horizontal distance travelled by the pellet.

  1. Express \(y = -2x^2 + 20x + 12\) in the form \(y = a(x-b)^2 + c\), where \(a\), \(b\) and \(c\) are constants.[2]
  2. Explain why the maximum height reached by the pellet is 62 metres.[2]
  3. A two-metre-tall pole is placed on the ground, at a horizontal distance of 10 metres from the shooting device. Explain if the pellet will hit the pole.[1]

Answer:(a) \(y=-2(x-5)^2+62\) (b) Maximum height \(=62\text{ m}\) (c) No; the pellet is \(12\text{ m}\) high at \(x=10\).
