Singapore envisions to be a car-lite nation. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) manages road infrastructure efficiently and ownership of vehicles, among other strategies.
Table 1: Comparison of lengths of roads (in km) and land area of cities (in \(\text{km}^2\))
| City | Length of Roads (km) | Land Area (\(\text{km}^2\)) | Road Density (\(\text{km/km}^2\)) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Singapore | \(9500\) | \(729\) | |
| Kuala Lumpur | \(2700\) | \(243\) | |
| Jakarta | \(7200\) | \(662\) | |
| London | \(14000\) | \(1572\) | |
| New York | \(12900\) | \(778\) |
\(\text{Road density}=\dfrac{\text{length of road}}{\text{land area}}\)
Table 2: Number of car registrations per \(10\,000\) people
| Country | Population (millions) | Car registrations (per \(10\,000\) people) |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore | \(5.64\) | \(1510\) |
| Malaysia | \(34\) | \(5210\) |
| Indonesia | \(276\) | \(800\) |
| United Kingdom | \(69\) | \(5620\) |
| United States | \(338\) | \(8390\) |
New car owners in Singapore must bid and register for a Certificate of Entilement (COE) before they can purchase a car. In each month, there are two bidding rounds. Successful bidders pay the COE amount based on the category (CAT A or CAT B) depending on the new car they intend to buy, and proceed to register their cars.
The total number of new registrations each month vary but the ratio of CAT A to CAT B registrations is about \(4:3\) each month.
Table 3: COE registrations in Singapore in the first 6 months of 2024
| Month | Bidding Round | CAT A (car up to \(1600\) cc & up to \(110\)kw) | CAT B (car above \(1600\) cc or above \(110\)kw) | Total New registrations |
