Worked Example 6

The perimeter of an isosceles triangle of base length [latex]x[/latex] cm and two sides of equal length [latex]y[/latex] cm is [latex]10[/latex]cm.

By using differentiation, show that when the area of the triangle is maximum,

(a)

the triangle is equilateral,

(b)

the area is [latex]\frac{25\sqrt{3}}{9}[/latex] units[latex]^{2}[/latex].
